What is grammatical gender?

Every German noun has a grammatical gender: masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das). That is the genus.

The gender can't always be determined from the meaning. But there are reliable patterns: certain endings and semantic categories point you to the right gender.

Tip

The best way to learn gender is together with the article. Always: der Tisch, die Lampe, das Fenster, never the noun alone.

02

Masculine: der

These semantic categories are typically masculine:

Category Examples
Male persons and professionsder Mann, der Arzt, der Lehrer, der Freund
Weekdays, months, seasonsder Montag, der Januar, der Sommer
Alcohol (exception: das Bier)der Wein, der Whisky, der Schnaps
Weatherder Regen, der Wind, der Schnee, der Frost
Cardinal directionsder Norden, der Süden, der Osten, der Westen

Typical endings for masculine nouns:

Ending Examples
-erder Computer, der Drucker
-order Motor, der Doktor
-lingder Frühling, der Liebling
-ismusder Tourismus, der Kapitalismus
-istder Polizist, der Journalist

A small group of masculine nouns still ends in -e: der Junge, der Kollege, der Name. These nouns follow the n-declension.

03

Feminine: die

These semantic categories are typically feminine:

Category Examples
Female persons and professionsdie Frau, die Ärztin, die Lehrerin

-umdas Zentrum, das Museum
-mentdas Instrument, das Argument
-nisdas Ergebnis, das Erlebnis

!

Nouns with -chen or -lein are ALWAYS neuter. Das Mädchen is neuter — even though a girl is female. The gender follows the ending here, not the meaning.

Multiple Articles

Some nouns have more than one article. When this changes the meaning, they are called homonyms.

Article changes the meaning

Depending on which article you use, you mean something different:

For these nouns both articles are correct. This often happens with loanwords. The meaning stays the same:
