01

What is the infinitive with zu?

Lots of verbs, adjectives and nouns get completed with zu + infinitive. The infinitive comes at the end, the zu sits right before it. A comma separates the two parts.

Ich versuche, pünktlich zu sein. (I'm trying to be on time.)
verb + zu
Es ist schön, dich zu sehen. (It's nice to see you.)
adjective + zu
!

No zu after modal verbs. können, wollen, müssen, dürfen, sollen, mögen take no zu. So it's Ich will kommen, never Ich will zu kommen.

02

When do you use the infinitive with zu?

You mainly need it in three places: after certain adjectives, after abstract nouns and after certain verbs.

1. After es ist / ich finde es + adjective

Es ist wunderbar, dich zu sehen. (It's wonderful to see you.)
es ist + Adjektiv
Ich finde es gut, früh aufzustehen. (I think it's good to get up early.)
ich finde es + Adjektiv
Es ist gefährlich, hier zu schwimmen. (It's dangerous to swim here.)
es ist + Adjektiv

2. After abstract nouns

Ich habe keine Zeit, zu kochen. (I have no time to cook.)
no time
Ich habe die Chance, ihn zu treffen. (I have the chance to meet him.)
the chance
Es ist mein Traum, nach Japan zu reisen. (It's my dream to travel to Japan.)
my dream

3. After certain verbs

Some verbs call for a second verb in the infinitive with zu. The example column shows how that looks.

The zu sits right before the last infinitive. With separable verbs it slips between the prefix and the stem, all written as one word: anzurufen.

CaseExample
one verbIch fange an zu kochen.
separable verbIch habe oft versucht, dich anzurufen.
two verbsEs ist gut, oft spazieren zu gehen.
with a modalEs ist schön, viel Urlaub machen zu können.

04

Same subject or dass?

The infinitive with zu has no subject of its own. The subject of the main clause also counts for the infinitive. If there are two different subjects, you need a clause with dass.

Ich hoffe, pünktlich zu kommen. (I hope to come on time.)
one subject: ich
Ich hoffe, dass er pünktlich kommt. (I hope that he comes on time.)
two subjects: ich / er
05

ohne … zu · anstatt … zu

Two fixed combinations with zu. Here too: same subject, infinitive at the end.

ohne … zu: something doesn't happen

Er ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden. (He left without saying goodbye.)
ohne … zu
Sie hat bestanden, ohne viel zu lernen. (She passed without studying much.)
ohne … zu

anstatt … zu: instead of something else

Er schaut fern, anstatt zu lernen. (He watches TV instead of studying.)
anstatt … zu
Anstatt zu klagen, solltest du handeln. (Instead of complaining, you should act.)
at the start
Tip

statt … zu is simply the shorter version of anstatt … zu. Both mean the same thing, and both are correct.
